Justice for Immigrants
People fleeing persecution in other countries coming to our borders have faced unprecedented obstacles to entry, including family separations and deportations that have added to their suffering.
We have addressed these issues with grants to the ACLU Foundation, the Women's Refugee Commission, the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights, and the International Rescue Committee. We are also participating in a Lever for Change in Refugee Resettlement with a grant to Village Enterprise that will help refugees from Somalia and South Sudan become productive in their host communities.

Voter Empowerment
The Florida Rights Restoration Council has helped to restore voting rights to ex-felons that were taken away by the Florida legislature after the voters of Florida overwhelmingly passed a Constitutional amendment supporting reenfranchisement.
Through Human Rights First, we supported Vets Power the Polls, a program that recruited veterans as poll workers in the 2020 election to replace older poll workers at elevated risk for COVID-19.
The Center for Technology and Civic Life aims to strengthen the performance of election departments across the country by providing training, technology, and funding in order to ensure free and fair elections that are secure, trustworthy, and inclusive. It aims to provide a more resilient election system and better informed and engaged voters.

Medical Debt Relief
Medical debt burdens the poor out of proportion to its effect on others. But it has also plunged many in the middle class into poverty, often because of a single severe illness. Americans carry tens of billions of medical debt, which is largely responsible for 66% of all bankruptcies, creating an additional crushing burden on families already dealing with life threatening illness.
RIP Medical Debt buys and forgives the medical debt of people at the bottom of the economic ladder. Using algorithms that identify those most severely impacted by their medical debt, it relieves their debt, purges their credit reports, and notifies them with letters indicating that their debt has been paid. RIP has already relieved billions in debt for millions of people, while advocating for universal health care that would eventually abolish this uniquely American scourge.

Code for America aims to shore up the social safety net by ensuring that every American has access to the services for which they are eligible. While government programs are designed to prevent children for going hungry and to provide access to essential medical care, government bureaucracy creates barriers for people to access these services. Code for America, using digital resources, works on simplifying the application process to make it easy to sign up for government programs. It aims also to integrate the various programs for which people are eligible so that nobody falls through the cracks in the system.

Nurturing Homes for Foster Children
Think of Us was founded by former foster children who used their lived experience as reference to transform the child welfare system. 1 in 17 US children will at some point enter the foster care system. These are predominantly children from families experiencing the most severe poverty and are disproportionately from communities of color. Think of Us seeks to intervene before children are sent to foster care by supporting families and communities at risk with housing, medical care, and food assistance. Foster children experience high rates of PTSD, homelessness, drug abuse, and unwanted pregnancy that can be prevented by keeping children in their families when possible or placing them with extended family members or other trusted adults. Providing support for older youth transitioning to adulthood is another way to help.
